A Malaria Journal article authored by Antimalarial Quality Module Head Dr Paul Newton and colleagues colleagues points to the high proportion of poor quality antimalarials in Africa. Counterfeit artemisinin derivative monotherapies, ACT and halofantrine antimalarials were found in samples collected from 8 of a total 11 African countries. These harmful counterfeits have important public health consequences and may lead to drug resistance. Read University of Oxford and Wellcome Trust press releases.
