WWARN mourns the loss a respected colleague and friend

It is with great sadness that we learned of the sudden and unexpected death of Dr Niklas Lindegardh. An accomplished scientist, Niklas was Head of the Clinical Pharmacology Laboratories at the Mahidol Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Unit (MORU), in Thailand, where he conducted innovative research to improve bioanalytical techniques and methodology for a wide range of antimicrobials. One focus was on the development of novel assays suitable for use in antimalarial field studies in vulnerable populations. A staunch supporter of WWARN from the very beginning, his skill and talent built the much-valued WWARN Pharmacology QA/QC Programme. The breadth and depth of his understanding of pharmacology informed his exceptional contributions to the analysis of all aspects of clinical pharmacokinetic studies, moving the field of antimalarial pharmacology towards addressing critical public health questions.

Niklas brought his enthusiasm and expertise to every project, whether it was running a marathon or organizing a conference on improving methods for assessing exposure to antimalarial drugs in clinical field studies. He leaves an incredible legacy of scientific work, both within WWARN and throughout the field of malaria research. A caring and loyal colleague and friend, Niklas inspired us to work harder and better with his incisive questions, far-reaching ambitions and boundless energy. Niklas is sorely missed and we send our sincere condolences to his wife Anna and two young children, Pontus and Ella.
