EDCTP Forum, 6-9 November 2016
Join us at the EDCTP Annual Meeting from 6-9 November 2016 in Lusaka, Zambia. We will presenting an oral session and two posters on our Molecular, Haematology and Methods Study Groups. We also invite you to a workshop and training session:
Monday 7th November 12.45-1.45PM
Location - Conference room 2, New Government Complex
This workshop will demonstrate tools available to support researchers developing a new clinical trial and provide you with an opportunity to provide feedback on the use of these resources, including the
new CDISC malaria standards. You can
pre-register for the open workshop

Wednesday 9th November 7.30–8.30AM
Location - Conference room 1, New Government Complex
This training session will showcase our molecular mapping tools including
K13,
pfmdr1 and pfcrt and
the
dhfr & dhps Surveyors that help users to investigate the changes in prevalence, in space and over time, of molecular markers associated with drug resistance. Facilitators will be available to gather your ideas and answers questions in French and English. You can

ASTMH 2016 Annual Meeting, 14-16 November 2016
WWARN together with the Infectious Diseases Data Observatory (IDDO) team will be attending this year’s American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH) 2016 Annual Meeting held in Atlanta, USA. We will have our usual meeting room space - contact us to arrange a side meeting during the conference. Visit the Centre for Tropical Medicine & Global Health booth, or the ACT Watch Medicine Quality booth in the exhibition area to meet staff members. We’d like to share updates on our latest malaria study groups, and highlights on our newly created Ebola and VL programmes. Download a full summary of IDDO and WWARN partner activities.
Symposia
November 14, 2016, 10:15 - 12:00 PM
Developing Responsible Data Sharing for Tropical Medicine
Location – Marriott Hotel - Room A601
Speakers - Philippe J. Guérin (Organiser), Estrella Lasry (Co-Chair), Oumar Gaye, Narcis B. Kabatareine, Adam C. Levine, Laura Merson
Many funders and journal now encourage, and in some cases oblige, researchers to "share" their primary data with external researchers to allow secondary analysis. However, the institutions that encourage data-sharing rarely offer detailed guidance on which data sets should be shared, where and how the data and associated meta-data should be deposited, and how to recognise the data contributors for their efforts. Sharing the results of research in low- and middle-income countries highlights some of these issues of equity, and the distribution of credit and reward. This symposium address these challenges collaboratively and begin to discuss creative solutions to assure that responsible data sharing will benefit the whole public health community. This symposium is organised by IDDO & WWARN Director, Prof Philippe Guérin.
November 16, 2016, 4:00 - 5:45 PM - Poor Quality Medicines - The Third Man Threat
Location - Marriott - Room A706/A707
Speakers - Jim Herrington (Organiser), Paul Newton (co-Chair), Megan Littrel, Mustapha Hajjou, Céline Caillet, Facundo Fernández
Themed after the book and movie "The Third Man" based around the trade of falsified penicillin in post-war Vienna, this symposium covers the theme of poor quality medicines. Falsified medicines, still a significant problem today, are harming patients and negating many of the benefits of modern medical care. Substandard medicines, resulting from unintentional but negligent errors in pharmaceutical manufacture, are also a major issue and may be contributing towards anti-microbial and parasitic drug resistance. Poor antimalarial quality is a key factor amongst those that threaten to undo the significant gains in malaria control seen in the last decade. This symposium will update you on the latest data and analysis from this neglected but critical and fast-moving field. This symposium is co-chaired by IDDO’s Head of Medicine Quality, Prof Paul Newton.
The WWARN West Africa Regional team will also attend the SOAP Congress of the African Society of Parasitology 2016 in Bamako, Mali from 5-7 December 2016. Details of this symposium will be shared soon.
If you would like to arrange a side meeting, or join one of our conference sessions, please email andrea.stewart@wwarn.org and georgina.humphreys@wwarn.org with details.
If you’re not attending, we will share highlights before, during and after the conferences via our Twitter @WWARN and Facebook pages.
