Clement Adebamowo is Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, and Institute of Human Virology, University of Maryland School of Medicine, and Associate Director (Population Science), Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center, Baltimore.
Prof Adebamowo directs the Fogarty-funded West African Bioethics Training Program which has provided medium-term training leading to Certificates in Research Ethics for 842 biomedical researchers, master’s degrees in bioethics to 34 individuals, and West African Bioethics-Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative online programmes to 6115 participants. He also conducts research into the ethical aspects of enrolling participants in genomics and cancer research in Africa.
Prof Adebamowo chairs the Nigerian National Health Research Ethics Committee which is responsible for regulation of research ethics committees and creating a research ethics regulatory infrastructure in Nigeria. He is a member of the National Institute of Health (NIH)/National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Data and Safety Monitoring Board for AIDS Co-Morbidities research. He is the principal investigator of the NIH-funded African Collaborative Center for Microbiome and Genomics Research (ACCME) which is one of the NIH/Wellcome Trust funded Human Heredity and Health in Africa (H3Africa) initiatives on genomics research and education. As part of this project, he established a comprehensive genomics laboratory in Nigeria. Prof Adebamowo is also principal investigator for the NIH funded Training Program in Nigeria for Non-Communicable Diseases Research (Traping-NCD) that has trained 12 advanced degrees and post-doctoral trainees to date.
