Join us at the symposia on Poor Quality Drugs and Antimicrobial Resistance at this year’s ASTMH. Chaired by Dr Joel Breman, ASTMH President-elect, the #98 symposia takes place on Friday 22 November, in Potomac C (Ballroom Level) from 4pm to 5.45pm.

This session will look at the issue of falsified and substandard drugs, which are a particular problem in low and middle income countries (LMICs), and the effect of these drugs on the development and spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
IDDO’s Medicine Quality lead Professor Paul Newton, of Lao Oxford Mahosot Wellcome Trust Research Unit (LOMWRU), will present his paper Antimicrobial quality and antimicrobial resistance – exploring the relationship
Other key contributors at the Symposium are:
- Probing the link between poor quality medicines and antimicrobial resistance in human and veterinary health: the case of Rifampin and Fluoroquinolones by Muhammad Zaman, of Boston University.
- Modeling the health and economic costs of substandard and falsified drugs in sub-Saharan Africa by Shunmay Yeung, of London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, London.
- Modelling the impact of poor quality antimicrobials on patient outcome and drug resistance by Lisa White, of Mahidol-Oxford, Oxford.
