WHO Consultant - call for applications
The World Health Organization is recruiting a Consultant to work within its Global Malaria Programme. Within the Drug Resistance and Containment Unit the Consultant will be expected to:
• Promote the implementation of norms and standards for the monitoring of antimalarial drug resistance including artemisinin resistance, and to provide authoritative advice to countries and partners in the area working closely with regional and subregional networks for the surveillance of drug resistance in particular in African Anglophone and Francophone countries;
• Ensure close collaboration at regional and country levels through the organization of inter-country meetings and informal consultations in particular in African Anglophone and Francophone countries;
• Advance research and development of new/improved tools and strategies for monitoring drug resistance including artemisinin resistance;
• Prepare regular reports on the situation of antimalarial drug resistance in the world;
• Communicate messages on antimalarial drug resistance current status at major meetings;
• Provide expert advice and technical assistance to drug development partners consistent with the needs of malaria control and elimination, including for purpose of delaying the onset of drug resistance;
• Provide regular reviews and updates on antimalarial drug development;
• Provide expert advice and technical assistance to drug development partners consistent with the needs of malaria control and elimination, including for purpose of delaying the onset of artemisinin resistance;
• Convene Technical Expert Group or Evidence Review Group meetings when needed;
DELIVERABLES:
1. Organize and participate in subregional workshops on antimalarial drug resistance;
2. Collect antimalarial drug efficacy data at country level;
3. Regular reports on antimalarial drug resistance;
4. Technical Expert Group meetings convened.
DUTY STATION:
The consultant will be based full time at the World Health Organization, Global Malaria Programme (WHO/GMP) headquarter in Geneva, Switzerland. He/She will be expected to undertake official travel for GMP as part of his/her duties.
All travel arrangements will be organized through an issuance of a WHO Travel Request.
TIMEFRAME:
• Start date: 1 April 2012
• End date: up to 1 year
CONSULTANT PROFILE:
• Essential: Medical degree or PhD in clinical sciences
• Desirable: Post graduate qualification in tropical medicine, public health or epidemiology
• Essential: At least five years experience at national and international level, in planning and implementing monitoring of antimalarial drug efficacy and drug resistance and research on antimalarial drug resistance. Experience in design, conduct and analysis of clinical trials.
• Desirable: Experience in malaria research, control and treatment
LANGUAGES:
Excellent knowledge in English and French. Knowledge of another WHO official language is an asset.
SALARY:
The consultant will be paid WHO consulting fees at a monthly rate based on the education and experience background of the candidate.
